1 – Overview

I had the opportunity to have in hands this notebook for two days and I must say it helped me a lot because I could fix some GPU monitoring issues I had with NVIDIA Optimus technology in my tools (GPU Caps Viewer, GPU Shark, FurMark or GLSL Hacker and GLSL Hacker-based products).

ASUS N550JK is an elegant notebook with its metallic finish (aluminum). Here are its main features:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 4710HQ (Haswell architecture) @ 2.5GHz (4 physical cores and 8 logical cores)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (Maxwell architecture) with 4GB of DDR3 128-bit graphics memory and Intel Graphics HD 4600 integrated GPU
  • CPU memory: 8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
  • HDD: 1.5TB @ 5400 rpm
  • Screen: 15.6-inch full HD (1920×1080) anti-glare IPS panel with 178-degree wide-view angles
  • Sound: Bang & Olufsen speakers with an external SonicMaster subwoofer

The N550JK comes with NVIDIA Optimus technology: Optimus chooses the best graphics processor for running each application, automatically routing workloads to either discrete NVIDIA GPUs or Intel integrated graphics.

I got that laptop a month ago and it is really great choice for the money it costs. To be more precise, I’ve got N550JK-CN019D. This particular model has 1T HDD with 7200 RPM, GTX850M with 2GB DDR3 and super-multi DVD (classical DVD RW, not a Blue-ray reader). I agree that DDR5 would be appreciated for the graphics card (this is not a gaming laptop). Also, the multi-touch pad don’t reacts on each tap, but maybe it can be fixed by some driver/patch. All in all, a very nice and cool (literally meaning – cold as metal) laptop. 🙂
