From FudZilla, AMD is working on the Radeon HD 5870 X2, the dual-GPU version of the Radeon HD 5870.
And one of the major problem is the power consumption: Radeon HD 5870 X2 has a TDP of 376W. This sounds logic when we know that the Radeon HD 5870 has a TDP of 188W.
From Geeks3D’s TDP Database, the TDP of the current Radeon HD 4870 X2 is only of 286W. That’s nearly an increase of 100 Watts! I understand better why AMD wants to limit the effect of FurMark 😉

That’s only at full load. During normal operation, it would be significantly less. Most people don’t even need this kind of horsepower. This is the type of thing you would put into an extreme setup so that you could run multiple monitors at full resolution while maintaining a high frame-rate.
